CHAPTER SEVEN

“Darling, you know enough about me to lead to my arrest and conviction for any number of crimes at a moment’s notice. Your secrets are safe with me. You can tell me anything, you know that.” She heard Melody pull hard on one of her extra long Sobranies.

Tara’s hair was still wet from the shower and her hands shook a little, nicotine withdrawal probably. She’d floated home from Jesse’s on a cloud, but now that she was away from him the cloud had evaporated and she felt very alone and not a little frightened by what had happened between them.

“Well, we, uh, we made love.”

“Good for you!”

“Outside on the grass.”

“All right! I bet you never screwed out under the sun with Gordon.”

“Good lord, no.” You never had to worry about doing anything crazy with Gordon. That had been one of the things, most of them now rather hard to recall, that she had liked about him. “And something weird happened.”

“What? Go on!”

“I fainted.”

“You swooned? Passed out?”

“Yes. It happened when I, er, when I had an—” How could she put it delicately?

“Orgasm.”

“Yes.” It was a relief that at least one of them could come right out and say things.

“I bet you never had an orgasm with Gordon, did you?”

“I thought I had, but I guess not.”

“Welcome to the world of the sexually satisfied woman. I’m raising my glass to you. And Jesse West has just shot up immeasurably on my ‘Is he the one for Tara?’ counter.”

“But I blacked out! That’s hardly a good thing.”

“I read about that in Cosmo once.” Tara heard Melody take another drag of her cigarette. “I always hoped I’d be dramatic enough to experience it, but no. You, however, are apparently made of more erotically ecstatic stuff than I.”

Tara ran a hand over her face. Everyone seemed to have heard of this crazy thing except her. She hadn’t wasted her teenage years reading magazines, though, or having sex.

“But what if I pass out and don’t wake up again?”

“At least you’d die happy, darling.”

“Melody! Be serious. I don’t think I ever want to experience that again.”

“Then you need to find someone else like Gordon so there won’t be any danger of you experiencing sexual ecstasy again. And, no, I’m not recommending that course of action.”
